Chroma Projects

Chroma Projects has been active on the Charlottesville Arts Scene for approaching 12 years now. It started out in a large mall storefront with a huge front gallery and resident artist spaces in the rear, plus an occasional experimental music and drama space in the garage beneath. Although we have reduced our size considerably over the years, we have continued our dedication to presenting contemporary artists from the mid-atlantic region, mixing those artists with our local artists. Our mission has always revolved around experimentation and exploration, but with a particular focus on nature and the environment. For the three summers before Covid, we annually celebrated our beautiful Rivanna river with a multi-disciplinary curated event called FLOW.

Our programming has always featured Charlottesville artists, but we believe that introducing artists from out of the area to our artists here has benefitted both the local and the visiting artists in many ways, providing collaborations and out of town opportunities. As regards Pandemic related projects, we presented a group show in the spring titled "Persephone Ascending". It was a large multi-site invitation to women artists to celebrate the coming of spring and the (seeming) emergence from the pandemic and other forces that have held our society in the dark. For the fall, as we slip back into Pandemic mode once again, we are presenting "Pandemonium: Postcards from the Edge" - 100 artists describe on a postcard the personal terms of dealing with the frustrations and struggles and even the humor associated with our current challenging times.
